ruby’s garden
Located just outside of Christchurch, this lifestyle block was designed for our clients – a young couple working from home who wanted to create a sanctuary, something that felt rural, relaxed, and low maintenance. Their vision was a modern take on a country garden. One that responded to the site’s prevailing winds, intense summer heat, and expansive views, while remaining manageable over time.
Working with the property’s existing layout, we refined the spatial structure to improve flow and useability, introducing varied planting zones that guide movement and frame outdoor living spaces.
A long, fragrant driveway lined with creeping rosemary sets the tone from the moment you arrive. Outdoor living is central to the design, with spaces for dining, lounging, growing, and relaxing—including a fireplace, vegetable garden, spa, and outdoor kitchen—all framed by a dynamic mix of height, texture, and soft, pastel hues. The result is a garden that feels expansive yet calm, contemporary yet connected to its rural surroundings.
The planting palette is intentionally restrained, focusing on texture, movement, and seasonal change. Large drifts of ornamental grasses and structural perennials anchor the design, while the couple took an active role in planting, carrying out the installation themselves under our guidance.
